Primary School Pupils’ Perception Of The Importance Of Physical Education: The Case Of Kenyatta University Primary School

In Kenya, there is a lot of emphasis on the examinable academic disciplines as compared to those fields that are categorized as non-academic or co-curricular activities in the school system. As various studies have shown, such a situation leads to less attention being directed towards Physical Education (PE), including use of timetabled PE lessons to teach examinable subjects. This happens to be the unfortunate situation despite the subject being compulsory in all schools in the country. In lower primary, there is emphasis on active participation in PE lessons but this gradually reduces as the pupils graduate to upper primary and prepare for national examinations. This study therefore, aimed at establishing the pupils’ perception of the benefits of physical education, if any in their school life. To conduct the study, a sample of two hundred pupils selected from class three to class eight as respondents. A validated self-administered questionnaire that captured social, health and psychological benefits of PE was used to collect data from the respondents. The data was summarized using frequencies and percentages. Chi-square was used to determine if there was any significant difference in the perception of male and female pupils of the benefits of PE. Results no significant difference in their perceptions, and while lower classes valued PE more than the higher ones. The higher classes, on the other hand, put more emphasis on the health and social benefits of the discipline. On the whole, the study established that while the pupils perceived physical education to be important in their school curricular, majority indicated the need for allotment of more time on the school timetable for teaching the subject.

Kerio Yusti

The principal object of the study is to determine if the corporal posture factor as accompany to the Acupuncture Therapy for the backache syndrome treatment generates minor index of recurrence that when it is accompanied by medication, individualized attention or recommended assistance. The research of explanatory character with a quasi-experimental design consisted on four experimental groups integrated by gymnast athletes from Lara State Team and from the National Venezuelan Team, those who suffer of Backache Syndrome, as indispensable condition. Every selected group received at random, an acupuncture therapy accompanied by any of the selected factors that were: corporal posture, medication, recommended assistance, and individualized attention. Data treatment was developed throughout the percentage considerations, assuming the statistical hypothesis which was formulated as: %1 ≠ %2, %1 ≠ %3, %1 ≠ %4, on the other hand Cambel (2005) with the comparison of groups; so the indicators of relative percentage frequency turn out to be appropriate enough for this study. As important conclusion, the study highlights the fact that the recurrence index of Backache Syndrome turned out to be significantly low (13 %) when corporal posture was the acupuncture therapy accompany factor. Meanwhile, the index was significant (27 %) when individualized attention was the factor used. With regard to the recommended assistance and medication factors, the index of recurrence were (32 %) and (54 %) respectively. Finally it is recommended to keep on this study trying to determine the variables that produced these effects in every experimental group with the intention of coming closer to a more detailed explanation of the events studied.
